This stamp celebrates and recognizes the Pioneer's arrival to Jupiter, the largest planet in the Solar System. In March 1972, NASA launched the Pioneer 10 spacecraft from the Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. The goal was to observe the asteroid belt and Jupiter. Arriving at Jupiter in December 1973, Pioneer 10 revealed Jupiter's intense radiation output, its tremendous magnetic field, and the probability of a liquid interior. The Pioneer 10 later became the most distant and longest-lived interplanetary explorer.
